Why Move?

Bad Neighborhood Links are Bad News
It is no secret that linking to and from a bad Internet neighborhood can seriously slow, halt or even reverse your SEO progress. However, now, I have first hand knowledge of what can happen when even a single source has cross links with a site in a good neighborhood.

We recently moved my personal blog to my company site - which is where you are reading this. Initially, we thought it might be a great way to get some inbound links with linking text being exactly what we wanted it to be.

We soon found that in actuality, cross links from XPRT Creative to http://jpoyer.wordpress.com began a slow descent of XPRT Creative ranking in Google, Yahoo and MSN SERPs. (more…)

Culture of TRUTH!

Wow — just gotta say: What He said!

“Understand the cost of the lie: The obvious costs of lying are a loss of integrity, credibility and work-force confidence. The less obvious costs occur over time …”

Great article. The only thing I would add, though the damage occurring over time might be less obvious in the beginning, it is far more dangerous as it causes fractures in the foundation of character.

Just my 2¢ anyway!

I found Seth Godin’s remote control

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

As I first started blogging not too long ago, it didn’t take me long to find the immense online presence of Seth Godin and his many sites of tips, ideas, humor, charm and … well … just tons of really great writing and ideas.

My question is — how does he find time to post on every blog and write his books and secretly tape The Upside Down Show?

Anonymous Surfing Not Just For Perverts

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Many of us have had the chance to get online and search for things that … well … maybe we shouldn’t be searching for. I have to admit - when I first got online access, I was similar to the high school graduate who leaves home for the first time with a taste of freedom that wasn’t there before. There was an exhilarating feeling of being able to do just what I want instead of what I have to do. So I did. (more…)

I shoplifted. Or did I?

I recently was issued a speeding ticket in Virginia; I was on my way home from my grandmother’s living “wake” with one thought on my mind — go to the bathroom and get more coffee. (more…)

How do I make my site WORK? Part 2

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

This is Part 2 of a lengthier browser compatibility / web page design discussion. See Part 1 for an overview of the main issues.

Recap: How many times have you gone to a site online and attempted to view some sort of cool thing that just doesn’t seem to work right? Have you ever attempted to submit a form and when you click the button nothing happens? Many times this is because of browser compatibility issues. (more…)

Hijacked Content and Negative Effect on SERPs

Friday, September 7th, 2007

As the good little SEOptimist that I am, I regularly moniter my sites’ rankings on various search engines for my specific key words. Appropriately using tags in my blog, I’m slowly but surely building my traffic and ranking the right way. The RIGHT WAY.

Recently, I was surprised to see the addition of one particular site linking to my company site. Since this site has appeared in my link:www.xprtcreative.com results, my ranking for certain keywords involving “Web Design” has steadily dropped. (more…)

Customer Service 101?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

I recently received an e-mail newsletter — from a site I like to frequent, marketingprofs.com. This short one-page “Get to the Point” newsletter is very informative and most times, I end up forward it to someone I know, because I think it’s worthy of passing along. (If you have anything to do with marketing yourself, your business, or other people’s businesses, marketingprofs.com can be an invaluable resource.)

For a recent issue, the topic was Customer Service 101. One of the items in this particular issue talked about how a customer is not your friend. It discussed how customers do not care about your personal issues, they don’t want to hear excuses about why you didn’t get something done, they really just care about their product / service. …

I must say, I totally disagree. (more…)

One Day, I Met a Web Server that Cried

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Sometimes, programmers do things that are a little … well … eccentric. Maybe it is because they get bored, or maybe it is just because they can. In my time as a marketing professional and a web designer, I have had the pleasure to meet many different programmers, who[se egos] come in all shapes and sizes. (more…)
